Our Cosmetic Standard
At Rustic Tails Woodworks, every piece is built with intention. Our furniture is handcrafted, hand-finished, and made from solid wood, never manufactured, never mass-produced, no veneers, plywood, or particle board. That means each table carries its own character, its own grain, its own story. No two pieces will ever be identical, and that’s exactly what makes handcrafted furniture worth owning.
Please read these standards before placing your order.
By ordering, you acknowledge and agree to these conditions.
Wood & Stain Variations
Every tree is unique and so is every board we use. Because of this, grain patterns will vary from piece to piece. Stain colors may appear slightly lighter or darker depending on the wood’s natural character.Â
We cannot guarantee an exact match to photos or to tables we've built previously or others have built.
We always use the correct stain or paint you selected, but the final appearance will naturally vary. This is normal, expected, and not something we can “rework” to achieve a perfect match.
This is the beauty of solid wood, not a defect.
Matching Stain Colors
We do not match stain colors based on photos. Lighting, filters, cameras, and monitors all distort color.
If you want a custom stain:
- You must provide the stain yourself, and
- You must specify which wood species you want used.
Even then, results can vary — because every board accepts stain differently. We cannot re-stain or re-finish a piece simply because the natural variation didn’t match what you imagined.
Sanding, Distressing & Stain Appearance
How a table is sanded has a direct effect on how the stain looks. Finely sanded tables appear lighter because the pores of the wood close and absorb less stain. Distressed or rougher surfaces appear darker because open pores accept more stain.
If you’re comparing a heavily distressed table to a finely finished one, the same stain will not look identical. This is expected and unavoidable.
Band Sawn Oak
If you choose band sawn oak, please be aware. Small waves and surface texture are part of the look. If you want a perfectly smooth top, choose smooth oak instead. Some areas may need additional sanding to remove large peaks or dips, which may reduce the visibility of saw marks in certain spots.
Band sawn oak is full of character, and with that character comes natural variation.
General Variations in Handcrafted Furniture
Handcrafted solid-wood furniture will always include natural and handmade characteristics such as:
- Open knots
- Visible brush strokes
- Minor textural variations
- Distress marks
- Wood filler spots
- Joint lines
- Exposed screws (on certain styles)
- Micro-imperfections
- Natural cracks or checks
- Up to 1 inch of dimensional variation due to custom construction
These features are not flaws they are signatures of real craftsmanship. Those who prefer machine perfect uniformity should not purchase handcrafted furniture.
Wood also expands and contracts with temperature and humidity. Traditional non-jointed tops may develop small gaps between boards over time. This movement is normal, does not affect structural integrity, and is not considered damage.
Jointed tops still include natural knots and character; we do not offer machine-manufactured perfection.
Lead Times
Your quoted lead time is an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date.
We typically carry 10+ active orders at any given moment. Some builds finish earlier than estimated; others are delayed due to supplier issues, weather, curing time, or other production factors.
We will always prioritize quality over rushing an order.
If you’re hoping to receive your furniture by a specific holiday or event, please understand that we cannot promise exact dates. We will always do our best, but handcrafted furniture requires patience.
A Final Word
We celebrate the uniqueness of every knot, grain line, and hand-brushed finish. These pieces are built to last for decades, full of soul, full of character, and full of the natural beauty that only handcrafted solid wood can offer.
We hope you’ll celebrate that uniqueness right along with us.
